Microsoft Leading the Competition

You may have seen the extremely moving and emotional commercial that Microsoft and Xbox released in the Fall of 2018. The ad features a young boy with a physical disability playing a video game surrounded by all of his friends who are cheering him on.

What makes this story commercial worthy is the severity of the young boys physical disability. This young boy does not have much control with his arms but is able to make it to the final level of a video game. After seemingly winning the game, he celebrates with his friends.

This boy, Owen, was one of the first people to debut this product to the market. This game controller features “two large buttons on the face, which can be operated with hands, elbows or feet. It is designed to be placed on the player’s lap, on a table, or on the floor, allowing for a number of control options.”

What Microsoft and Xbox is doing is making video games more accessible to every type of player. Much like technology is constantly adapting, companies rarely think to update their technology to incorporate all walks of life. This makes them one of the leading competitors in technology.

In class we learn that technology is a fast changing mechanism, the ability to create a controller that offers players of any ability to play is just one small step in that direction. Much like the constant efforts that went into making the cell phone, or even the computer, making something as simple as a controller for everybody could quite literally change the world.
